MONOCOQUE ALUMINUM STRUCTURE DESIGN FOR LIGHT TACTICAL VEHICLE WITH EMPHASIS ON DEFEATING UNDER BODY BLAST EVENT AND IMPROVING CREW SURVIVABILITY2024-01-34868/12/2014
ABSTRACT In order to defeat under body blast events and improve crew survivability, a monocoque aluminum cab structure has been designed as a drop on solution based on the current M1151A1 (HMMWV) chassis. The structure is comprised of all 5083-H131 Aluminum alloy armor plates with various thicknesses. The structure design consists of the following new features: (1) Robust joining design utilizing interlocking ballistic joints and mechanical interlocking features, (2) unique B-pillar gusset design connects roof & floor with B-pillar & tunnel, and (3) “Double V” underbody shaping design. The TARDEC designed, integrated & built vehicle achieved no crew core body injuries for a vehicle of this weight class and demonstrated meeting the crew survivability objective when subjected to a 2X blast during the live fire underbody blast tests. These efforts help to not only baseline light tactical vehicle capabilities, but also validate the possibility of meeting aggressive blast objectives for light tactical vehicles. These results provide government-owned designs that are scalable and actionable solutions for future HMMWV fleet upgrades.

This SAE Recommended Practice establishes the test procedures and minimum performance criteria necessary to fulfill the intended purpose and is applicable to Skidders, Grapple Skidders, and Crawlers when used in the harvesting of trees. Structures meeting these performance criteria may not provide complete operator protection under all conceivable circumstances, but they are expected to minimize the possibility of operator injury under reasonable operating situations. The performance requirements and test criteria included in this document are derived from investigations on operator protection that has performed the intended function in a variety of actual operating conditions. Objective This document is intended to establish a consistent, repeatable means of evaluating Operator Protective Structures (OPS) on Skidders, Grapple Skidders, and Crawlers when used in the harvesting of trees. Operator Protective Structures are structures/enclosures whose primary purpose is to minimize the possibility of operator injury from hazards such as whipping saplings, branches, jill-poking (spear-like objects), and snapping winch lines with the least adverse effect on operator visibility, comfort, and protection from other hazards.

This report discusses the use of specialized analytical procedures that can be used to predict the structural behavior of ROPS and machine frame systems subjected to testing as described in SAE Recommended Practice J1040. For practical reasons, these complex calculations require the use of computerized methods. Specific approaches that are thought to be essential to preparing accurate analytical predictions are described. The importance of an experienced ROPS analyst is reviewed. The use of analytical procedures to predict the performance of ROPS is especially desirable for ROPS designed for installation on very large off-road machines, where problems of testing are extraordinarily great, and for predicting the effects of changes to proven ROPS designs before retesting. This report also covers the use of these analytical techniques as ROPS design tools.
