The heating value or heat of combustion is a measure of the energy available from the fuel. The fraction or percentage of the heat of combustion that is converted to useful work is a measure of the thermal efficiency of an engine. Thus, a knowledge of the heat of combustion of the fuel is basic to the engineering of automotive engines. This SAE Information Report provides information on the standardized procedures for determining the heat of combustion of fuels that may be used for automotive engines. The changes to SAE J1498 include: SAE Publications - Added SAE Paper 2010-01-1517 Other Publications and Sections 5, 9, and 10 - Updated ASTM alphanumeric designations and titles. Section 10 - Added discussion of a method to calculate net heating value for gasoline-ethanol blends using ASTM D3338

It presents a method that utilizes warranty and field repair data to calculate the failure rates of individual electronic components and predict the reliability of the entire electronic system. It assumes that the user has access to a database containing field return data with classification of components, times to failure, and a total number of components operating in the field

The Physics-of-Failure (PoF) is a science-based approach to reliability that uses modeling and simulation to design-in reliability. This approach models the root causes of failures such as fatigue, fracture, wear, and corrosion. Computer-Aided Design (CAD) tools have been developed to address various loads, stresses, failure mechanisms and sites. PoF uses knowledge of basic failure processes to prevent failures through robust design and manufacturing practices, and aims to: Design-in reliability up front; Eliminate failures prior to testing; Increase fielded reliability; Promote rapid, cost effective deployment of Health and Usage Monitoring Systems (HUMS); Improve diagnostic and prognostic techniques and processes; and, Decrease operational and support costs. This guide provides a high level overview of the methodology, process and advantages to performing a PoF assessment

This document reviews the state of the art for data scaling issues associated with air induction system development for turbine-engine-powered aircraft. In particular, the document addresses issues with obtaining high quality aerodynamic data when testing inlets. These data are used in performance and inlet-engine compatibility analyses. Examples of such data are: inlet recovery, inlet turbulence, and steady-state and dynamic total-pressure inlet distortion indices. Achieving full-scale inlet/engine compatibility requires a deep understanding of three areas: 1) geometric scaling fidelity (referred to here as just “scaling”), 2) impact of Reynolds number, and 3) ground and flight-test techniques (including relevant environment simulation, data acquisition, and data reduction practices). The Model-to-Full Scale Subcommittee of the S-16 Turbine Engine Inlet Flow Distortion Committee has examined archives and has obtained recollections of experts regarding air induction system development

ARP1834 provides general guidance for the selection, approach to, and performance of various kinds of F/FA of digital systems and equipment. Its prime objective is to present several industry-acceptable, cost-effective methods for identifying, analyzing, and documenting digital-equipment failure modes and their effects. The analysis techniques and considerations presented here are directed to digital-equipment hardware faults and failures exclusively. ARP1834 is not intended as an exhaustive treatment of the enormously complex process involved in the analytical failure evaluation of complete digital systems, nor as a universally applicable, definitive listing of the necessary and sufficient steps and actions for such evaluation. ARP4761 provides updated methods and processes for use on civil aircraft safety assessment. When analyzing these types of systems, ARP4761 should be used in lieu of this ARP. ARP1834 addresses the following areas of consideration in the preparation and

This Performance Standard covers the Qualification Test Requirements for separable fittings, permanent fittings, and tubing suitable for use in 8000 psi aerospace fluid power systems. The standard treats each of these elements as part of a “system” in which each element has a specific critical relationship one to the other This document is applicable to both the pressure (8000 psi) and the return (4000 psi) portions of an 8000 psi rated system. Rationale for tests, testing philosophy, and key words are covered in Sections 5 and 6

This performance standard specifies a universal method of measuring the dimensional change of friction materials to determine the effects of temperature. The test applies to both, disc and drum type linings commonly used in hydraulic and air brake systems for automotive or commercial vehicle applications. This standard describes two main test procedures. Method A, where the friction material is in contact with a heated surface to simulate the heat input to the pad that occurs during actual usage. Method B uses an oven to heat the freestanding material and is an approximate procedure requiring less instrumentation. Method A is recommended for disc brake pad assemblies, noise insulators, or flat coupons; while Method B is recommended for curved drum brake linings

This SAE Aerospace Recommended Practice (ARP) is intended as a guide to aid in the specification and testing of Direct Drive Servovalves, but does not include the associated electronic controller. The recommendations contained in this ARP are primarily confined to the input and output characteristics of Direct Drive Servovalves (DDV). The only exception to this approach involves the definition and specification of chip shear force, which is not typically measurable by nondestructive external testing. The information presented should be useful in standardizing the terminology, the specification of physical and performance parameters, and the test procedures used in conjunction with these components. Direct drive servovalves are of two basic types: open loop and closed loop. In the case of open loop direct drive servovalves, the significant input is the motor current as is the case with electrohydraulic servovalves covered in ARP490. A closed loop direct drive servovalve includes a means

This report covers engine tests performed in Altitude Test Facilities (ATFs) with the primary purpose of determining steady state thrust at simulated altitude flight conditions as part of the in-flight thrust determination process. As such it is complementary to AIR1703 and AIR5450, published by the SAE E-33 Technical Committee. The gross thrust determined using such tests may be used to generate other thrust-related parameters that are frequently applied in the assessment of propulsion system performance. For example: net thrust, specific thrust, and exhaust nozzle coefficients. The report provides a general description of ATFs including all the major features. These are: Test cell air supply system. This controls the inlet pressure and includes flow straightening, humidity and temperature conditioning. Air inlet duct and slip joint. Note that the report only covers the case where the inlet duct is connected to the engine, not free jet testing. Thrust stand force measurement system
