Scope
Content
This document covers the general physical, electrical, functional, testing, and performance requirements for conductive power transfer, primarily for vehicles using a conductive ACD connection capable of transferring DC power. It defines conductive power transfer methods, including the infrastructure electrical contact interface, the vehicle connection interface, the electrical characteristics of the DC supply, and the communication system. It also covers the functional and dimensional requirements for the vehicle connection interface and supply equipment interface. New editions of the documents shall be backwards compatible with the older editions. There are also sub-documents which are identified by a SAE J3105/1, SAE J3105/2, and SAE J3105/3. These will be specific requirements for a specific interface defined in the sub-document.
  • SAE J3105: Main document, including most requirements.
    1. SAE J3105/1: Infrastructure-Mounted Cross Rail Connection
    2. SAE J3105/2: Vehicle-Mounted Pantograph Connection
    3. SAE J3105/3: Enclosed Pin and Socket Connection
Rationale
Content
The original document was initially intended for on-route charging and not necessarily in a depot setting with vehicles charging adjacent to one another. The significant change in this current update is that an RFID tag has been added including the logic to ensure that the correct vehicle is paired with the correct infrastructure prior to enabing charge in close proximity. The vehicle height requirements were modified to correct an oversight. Y-cap requirements were changed to reflect a better technical solution. Sequential charging logic was added to allow for it. All timing diagrams were updated for the new subjects. A new appendix, Appendix I, is included to help clarify the additions required to support sequential charging and RFID/EVCCID pairing. A new appendix, Appendix J, is added to document the test procedure for validating the new sections of the document. Appendix I was used by the committee to verify that the system described and controls do work. A week in October was spent at the Heliox facility with more than 12 experts ranging from OEMs, charging OEMs, control OEMs, and others. Finally, miscellaneous grammar and typos were corrected.
