- Introduction—In hydraulic fluid power systems, a hydraulic cylinder is a means to convert fluid pressure into mechanical force. The configuration and materials used in the design of a cylinder are critical factors influencing its function. The static and dynamic friction characteristics of a hydraulic cylinder are an indication of its mechanical efficiency. This SAE Recommended Practice is written to provide a method for determining the no load friction of a hydraulic cylinder. It was based originally on a BFPR document OSU HC-2.
