Long wave ultraviolet or UV-A irradiation (between 320 and 400 nm) is used for fluorescent inspections in magnetic particle and liquid penetrant examinations. UV-A irradiation is obtained from either LED, fluorescent, or high intensity discharge lamps that are stationary or portable. Commercially available UV-A lamps possess a large variation in intensity output that may introduce a legitimate concern for possible health hazards. This document reviews the nature of UV-A irradiation emitted by lamps and acceptable UV dosage limits adopted by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH®) and European Union and recommendation of proper practices when working with UV-A irradiation.
This method is intended to evaluate the thermal and oxidative stability of synthetic, ester-based aviation lubricants under defined conditions of time and temperature. This method is applicable to lubricants meeting the compositional and performance requirements of AS5780.

The SAE J1939 documents are intended for light, medium, and heavy-duty vehicles used on or off road, as well as appropriate stationary applications which use vehicle derived components (e.g., generator sets). Vehicles of interest include, but are not limited to, on- and off-highway trucks and their trailers, construction equipment, and agricultural equipment and implements. The purpose of these documents is to provide an open interconnect system for electronic systems. It is the intention of these documents to allow Electronic Control Units to communicate with each other by providing a standard architecture. This particular document, SAE J1939-21, describes the data link layer using the Classical Extended Frame Format (CEFF) with 29-bit IDs, as defined in ISO 11898-1, December 2015. For SAE J1939, no alternative data link layers are permitted.
This SAE Recommended Practice provides dimensional specifications for the 41/2 and 53/4 inch general service sealed lighting units, intended for use in such applications as motorcycle headlamps, military headlamps, industrial machinery headlamps, fog lamps, spot lamps, etc. See Figures 1 and 2 and Tables 1 and 2.
This document contains procedures for performance testing of electrical terminals, connectors, and components for coaxial-style cable with an outside cable diameter of 3.6 mm and smaller. These are often called “mini coax connector systems.” This specification applies to coaxial cable connection systems that operate at frequencies from DC to 9 GHz and are intended for road vehicles. The characteristic impedance of the mini coax connection system described here is 50 Ω, however nothing excludes the use of these connectors in systems with a different characteristic impedance. This specification applies only to connection systems using coaxial cable.
This Aerospace Standard (AS) covers the general minimum performance standards for generators/starter-generators and associated voltage regulators for use in direct current (DC) electric systems for civil aircraft.
This SAE Aerospace Information Report (AIR) provides information on aircraft cabin air quality, including: Origins of chemical airborne contaminants during routine operating and failure conditions. Exposure control measures, including design, maintenance, and worker training/education. This AIR does not deal with airflow requirements.
This SAE Information Report SAE J2836/6 establishes use cases for communication between plug-in electric vehicles and the EVSE for wireless energy transfer as specified in SAE J2954. It addresses the requirements for communications between the on-board charging system and the wireless EV supply equipment (WEVSE) in support of detection of the WEVSE, the charging process, and monitoring of the charging process. Since the communication to the charging infrastructure and the power grid for smart charging will also be communicated by the WEVSE to the EV over the wireless interface, these requirements are also covered. However, the processes and procedures are expected to be identical to those specified for V2G communications specified in SAE J2836/1. Where relevant, the specification notes interactions that may be required between the vehicle and vehicle operator, but does not formally specify them. Similarly, communications between the on-board charging sub-system and the on-board vehicle
This specification covers cored and uncored open cell latex foam rubber sheets, molded and hand- built shapes having good shock-absorbing, vibration-damping, and comfort cushioning characteristics (see 6.1).
The previous revision of AIR5784 summarizes some of the available literature on cabin air study, engine oil composition, decomposition, and toxicity testing. This revision of AIR5784 includes literature and information on stakeholder involvement, selected air sampling studies, oil composition, and oil degradation, published from 2000 to 2023. The entire contents of the reviewed literature are not necessarily endorsed by either SAE or the members of the study group who produced it. This is not a comprehensive review but is intended to enable E-34 and other technical organizations to participate in informed discussions on the topic. Also, the review is intended to indicate where additional work may be necessary to properly gauge the potential role that turbine lubricants (and OPs) play in cabin air quality. The toxicology of oil fumes and their individual constituents is beyond the scope of this document and outside the remit of this committee.
This specification covers a corrosion and heat resistant nickel alloy in the form of sheet, strip, and plate.
This specification establishes the requirements for self-locking nuts, wrenching type (i.e., hexagon, double hexagon, and spline drive), made of a corrosion and heat resistant steel of the type identified under the Unified Numbering System as UNS S66286.
The scope of the test method is to provide stakeholders including fluid manufacturers, airport operators, brake manufacturers, aircraft constructors, aircraft operators and airworthiness authorities with a relative assessment of the effect of deicing chemicals on carbon oxidation. This simple test is only designed to assess the relative effects of runway deicing chemicals by measuring mass change of contaminated and bare carbon samples tested under the same conditions. It is not possible to set a general acceptance threshold oxidation limit based on this test method because carbon brake stack oxidation is a function of heat sink design and the operating environment.
This paper describes a recommended practice and procedure for the correlation of test cells that are used for the performance testing of APU (auxiliary power unit) engines. Test cell correlation is performed to determine the effect of any given test cell enclosure and equipment on the performance of an engine relative to the baseline performance of that engine. The baseline performance is generally determined at the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) designated test facility. Although no original equipment manufacturer (OEM) documents are actually referenced, the experience and knowledge of several OEMs contributed to the development of this document. Each engine Manufacturer has their own practices relating to correlation and they will be used by those OEMs for the purpose of establishing certified test facilities.
This SAE Standard presents a test procedure for determining the airborne sound insulation performance of materials and composite layers of materials commonly found in mobility, industrial, and commercial products under conditions of representative size and sound incidence so as to allow better correlation with in-use sound insulator performance. The frequency range of interest is typically 100 to 10000 Hz 1/3-octave band center frequencies. This test method is designed for testing flat samples with uniform cross section, although in some applications the methodology can be extended to evaluate formed parts, pass-throughs, or other assemblies to determine their acoustical properties. For non-flat parts or assemblies where transmitted sound varies strongly across the test sample surface, a more appropriate methodology would be ASTM E90 (with a reverberant receiving chamber) or ASTM E2249 (intensity method with an anechoic or hemi-anechoic receiving chamber).
This specification covers one type of glass cloth coated on one face with aluminum and the other face with silicone rubber.
This document describes a rigorous-engineering fuel-consumption test procedure that utilizes industry accepted data collection and statistical analysis methods to determine the change in fuel consumption for trucks and buses with gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of more than 10000 pounds, equipped with internal combustion engines using diesel, gasoline, or their liquid substitutes. The test procedure may be conducted on a test track or on a public road under controlled conditions and supported by extensive data collection and data analysis constraints. The on-road test procedure is offered as a lower cost alternative to on-track testing, but the user is cautioned that on-road test may result in lower resolution (or precision) data due to a lack of control over the test environment. Test results that do not rigorously follow the method described herein are not intended for public use and dissemination and shall not be represented as an SAE J1321-Type II test result.
