As we transition towards Internet of Things (IoT) - humans are connected to each other & outside world through the smartphone. Customers tend to use smartphones for varied purposes ranging from communication to entertainment. However, the concern of distraction exists due to poor visibility & accessibility of the phone's screen in driving condition. One of the repercussion of being connected to smartphone particularly in driving condition includes higher number of road accidents due to distraction. This paper explains one of the key initiatives taken by Maruti Suzuki India Limited to address the same. This is done by offering an entry level connected infotainment system which comprises of the following three components: (a) An entry-level infotainment with basic display & vehicle connectivity, (b) A Dock mounted on infotainment panel enabling safe usage of smartphone due to its position i.e. accessibly and visibility in driving condition, (c) A Driving App specifically designed for driving usage where one can access calling, messaging, navigation on the go with a vibrant UI & easy to use gestures. Infotainment has been always an important aspect of life which has made its way to car design. The cars today are much more advanced compared to their predecessors. In-Vehicle Infotainment has evolved greatly over years from a simple tuner based radio with a small LED display to a complex system with highly intelligent interactive HMI which can mirror the smart phone. The full-fledged entertainment features like watching videos are restricted to only rear passengers. In drive mode, drivers are limited with access to only audio to avoid driver distraction. Rear passengers and drivers are classified into different audio zones. Each of the rear passengers are equipped with headsets so that audio merging with driver zone can be avoided. This leads to passenger discomfort, as many passengers would not prefer to hook up with headset all the time. Now the automotive world is envisioned to reach fully autonomous mode where there is no driver and every passenger is interested to listen to music/video of diverse interest. This SAE Recommended Practice provides a set of core data elements needed by information service providers for Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS). The data dictionary herein provides the foundation for ATIS message sets for all stages of travel (pre-trip and en route), all types of travelers (drivers, passengers), all categories of information, and all platforms for delivery of information (in-vehicle, portable devices, kiosks, etc.). The elements of this document are the basis for the SAE ATIS Message Set Standard J2354 and are entered into the SAE Data Registry for ITS wide coordination.
