This document defines the technical guidelines for the safe integration of Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) Fuel Cell Systems (FCS), fuel (considered to be liquid and compressed hydrogen storage types only), fuel storage, fuel distribution and appropriate electrical systems into the aircraft. Editorial Note: Today PEM systems and fuel storage represent the most mature FCS technology and currently forms the basis for this standard. Other types of fuel cell systems and fuels (including reforming technologies and electrolyzers), may be covered by a further update to this document.
AE-7F Hydrogen and Fuel Cells
Long wave ultraviolet or UV-A irradiation (between 320 and 400 nm) is used for fluorescent inspections in magnetic particle and liquid penetrant examinations. UV-A irradiation is obtained from either LED, fluorescent, or high intensity discharge lamps that are stationary or portable. Commercially available UV-A lamps possess a large variation in intensity output that may introduce a legitimate concern for possible health hazards. This document reviews the nature of UV-A irradiation emitted by lamps and acceptable UV dosage limits adopted by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH®) and European Union and recommendation of proper practices when working with UV-A irradiation.

The related standard ARP5718 provides the process by which endurance time data is converted to holdover times for publication by regulators and subsequent use by aircraft operators.

This SAE Recommended Practice incorporates dynamometer test procedures that produce riding range estimates for electric motorcycles during stop-and-go urban riding on surface streets and commuting trips in urban areas that include operation on freeways. This is typically done using a “coastdown” approach by disengaging the engine and assuming all losses are aerodynamic. However, with inherent losses in an electric motor, and no way to fully disengage the motor, another approach is to use a “on-road, constant speed” (Appendix B) method for fully electric vehicles to develop dynamometer coefficients.

The primary purpose of vehicle forward lighting is not to see the world but to see the road! In their simplest form, headlights help drivers negotiate a safe path on the road. They do this by lighting the roadway according to (a multitude of) specific standards. For decades, discussions concerning the niceties of illuminating potential obstacles in the roadway were little more than an academic pursuit as there simply were not sufficient lumens available from filament light sources to achieve all of the desired tasks no matter how worthy they might be. Not unexpectedly, the technology has evolved with the introduction of high output metal-halide sources, multi-task standards combined with multilevel lighting devices and discrete LED sources offering high luminous efficiencies and the means to deliver the light where it can be most useful. This SAE Recommended Practice describes the test procedure for conducting a rollover test using a dolly fixture designed to laterally trip a vehicle into a roll. Its purpose is to establish a recommended test procedure which will standardize the procedure between different test facilities. A description of the test procedure, test instrumentation, photographic/video coverage, and the rollover fixture is included.

The Mounting Height Task Force was tasked to determine the extent of the problem(s) associated with vehicle headlamps mounted at or above the level of the mirror(s) in passenger vehicles; the level of glare exposure caused by high-mounted headlamps; the appropriate height differential needed to maintain a glare level consistent with past and/or current passenger vehicle headlamp mounting; and the necessary headlamp mounting height necessary to control mirror glare at an accepted/acceptable level. The report herein addresses these passenger vehicle mounting height issues.

While this report does not include a discussion of all of the available data defining human response or address all body areas, for those areas addressed it does utilize references generally judged by those in the field to be practical and meaningful guidelines for the development of human surrogates. This report is intended to be a “living” document that will be updated periodically. A number of problems need to be addressed in defining human impact response characteristics. There is the problem of human response variability from subject to subject in volunteer tests. There is the problem of extrapolating such volunteer data which are obtained at low impact severities to higher impact severities using human cadaver response data obtained at injurious levels of impacts. Live animal experiments have been conducted over the years in an attempt to define human impact response and tolerance. Following a number of high-visibility collisions between aircraft on the airport surface, overall taxi operations have been brought under greater scrutiny. In addition, observation of taxi operations and the results of associated research programs have revealed that the efficiency of taxi operations could be significantly improved with available technologies and by applying a human centered design approach. Surface operations displays have been tested in prototype form and a number of manufacturers are moving toward product definition. This document provides guidance on the design of elements, which may be part of surface operations displays whose objectives would be to enhance safety and to improve overall efficiency of aircraft operations on the airport surface. Such efficiency increases should be realized not only in day-to-day operations, but should also be manifested in training for surface operations.
