SAE J3108 Recommended Practice (RP) provides fuel and hazard guidance for first and second responders of incidents associated with alternative fueled vehicles. The intent of SAE J3108-1 is to present responders with a limited number of intuitive letters and colors. The International community is in the process of adopting International Standards Organization (ISO) 17840, which provides first and second responders with a standardized format for emergency information. While the ISO 17840 format in coloring and lettering can be adopted and should be encouraged when possible, it is intended for large and heavy vehicles. SAE J3108-1 provides a means for responders to recognize fuel and vehicle type on North American light duty vehicles due to size constraints preventing use of ISO 17840 labels.1 While encouraged to be adopted or referenced by vehicle manufacturers, this RP has been developed for the use of States and other Governmental bodies. This SAE Aerospace Information Report (AIR) outlines transient measurement methods to determine engine-generated levels of relevant compressor bleed air contaminant marker compounds on a ground level test cell for aircraft propulsion engine or auxiliary power unit (APU) to be fitted on civil and military aircraft. This AIR focuses on lubrication oils that might enter the bleed air through leaking engine seals or other sources. Also considered are ingested engine combustion products, which must be differentiated from oil. The intent of this AIR is to identify key species that are markers typical of contaminants, not to characterize all possible contaminants. Real-time (transient) measurement methods to approximately quantify those markers are also discussed. Real-time methods developed for transient measurement could also be applied for real-time measurements in steady state operations in ground level test beds. This recommended practice provides instructions for measuring and calculating the exhaust emissions and fuel economy of such vehicles over the following standard test cycles: the Urban Dynamometer Driving Schedule (UDDS), the Highway Fuel Economy Driving Schedule (HFEDS), the US06 Driving Schedule (US06), the SC03 Driving Schedule (SC03), and the cold-start Federal Test Procedure (cold FTP), which is based on the UDDS. However, the procedures are structured so that other driving schedules may be substituted, provided that the corresponding preparatory procedures, test lengths, and weighting factors are modified accordingly. The document reviews best practices for collecting and measuring samples from both raw and diluted exhaust gas streams across several sample probe insertion locations relative to installed aftertreatment devices. Appropriate dilution techniques, sample transfer processes, and temperature management techniques are included. Finally, performance and validation checks are covered to ensure that long-term degradation and instrument failures can be identified quickly. The scope of this document focuses on the tests required by EPA to validate the performance of the FTIR system following the section in the Code of Federal Regulations Part 1065 (40 CFR 1U.1065 and hereafter referred to as “EPA Part 1065”) on the guidelines and performance criteria for various regulated gases. This document focuses on the use of continuous emissions sampling for both engine and vehicle testing. Future addenda will be needed to cover bag and other sampling techniques. Gas components that do not currently have performance criteria but may soon be regulated are noted and EPA suggestions as to what should be required are applied. This will help ensure that the FTIR will be recognized as a valid and alternative tool for engine exhaust emissions testing. This is an initial release of a recommended practice for an interface to supplier simulations that utilize traditional inter-process communication (IPC) methods of shared memory and semaphore communications. These IPC methods are standard practice in the computer science world and allow for communication by separate processes running on a computer without any common runtime requirements. This allows things like 32-bit applications to talk with 64-bit applications, as well as any other compiler version or runtime library dependencies being required by the calling program to interface with the called model. This also allows the calling program and the called program to be run on separate CPUs to allow parallel execution of the called program as well as multiple instances of the called program to execute all on separate processors. The Class A Task Force of the Vehicle Network for Multiplex and Data Communications Committee is publishing this SAE Information Report to provide insight into Class A Multiplexing. Multiplexed actuators are generally defined as devices which accept information from the multiplexed bus. A multiplexed actuator can be an output device controlled by the operator or an intelligent controller. A Multiplex actuator can also be a display device that reports the status of a monitored vehicle function. This document is intended to help the network system engineers and is meant to stimulate the design thought process. A list of multiplexed actuator examples is provided in Appendix A, Figure A1. Many other examples can be it identified.

The purpose of this SAE Aerospace Information Report (AIR) is to provide rotorcraft and engine designers with a better understanding of turboshaft engine idle power characteristics and objectives to be considered in the design and integration process. For the purpose of this document, idle is the lowest suitable steady-state power setting, most commonly corresponding to a gas generator speed setting or range. In general, a lower engine idle setting is desired by the airframer to reduce noise, fuel consumption, and main rotor downwash when on the ground and to reduce the size requirement of a rotor brake system. In contrast, the engine manufacturer generally prefers a higher engine idle setting, as operation further away from the engine design speed involves more challenges in operability and mechanical design. The task of chemical process operator in the parts cleaning area is generally considered unskilled labor and in the past, little or no training had been provided or recommended. Since overhaul cleaning is a critical process step prior to visual and fluorescent penetrant inspection processes, consideration must be given to minimum levels of training for these process operators. It is the responsibility of the department supervisor to ensure that all personnel within the department are trained to acceptable level in all general aspects of health and safety and basic operating procedures. This document is intended to augment the local quality control system which will control the application and frequency of the guidelines stated within.
