Authors Abstract

In the European automotive industry waterborne paint materials have gained an important market share. Among the new developed waterborne systems the polyurethane technology offers the opportunity to achieve the same high quality level that has been obtained in the past by the use of solventborne 1- and 2-component PUR-materials.
In the primer surfacer area, waterborne PUR-based systems that exhibit the same or even better stone chip resistance than the corresponding solventborne ones have already been developed and introduced into the market.
For the top coat area exist as well many efforts to introduce waterborne systems. Among the various approaches being considered, the waterborne 2-component PUR system provides not only excellent film properties but shows also interesting and promising application characteristics.
