This paper presents an overview of the U.S. Navy Mobility Fuel R&D Program (MFRDP) for the surface, non-nuclear fleet. The major objective is to provide the technology on which to base future fuel usage strategies. A Fuel Qualification Procedure (FQP) Program is under development to minimize the time and cost to qualify candidate fuels. The current thrusts of the MFRDP are to determine the fuel property tolerance limits and performance/durability correlations of existing fossil-fuel prime movers and to provide solutions to current fuel storage degradation problems. Small-scale, gas turbine combustor and full-scale, high-speed diesel engine evaluations for the fuel properties most sensitive to this equipment are underway.
