Authors Abstract
Content
Examination of the weight and power requirements of main battle tanks over the past 50 years shows several clear trends. Tanks are becoming more “dense” in that they are becoming heavier and smaller while their power requirements, both propulsive and ancillary, are rapidly increasing. Turbomachines provide high power and are compact and light; therefore, they represent a class of energy conversion devices meriting serious consideration in tank design. Several types of applicable turbomachines are examined from a power density standpoint and some trade-offs affecting their interaction in an integrated propulsion system are described. Specific comparisons are made of actual and conceptual combat vehicle installations.
