Authors Abstract
Content
The components in the synchronisation of truck gear boxes belong to the most highly stressed automotive parts. Specifically, the synchronization rings must resist shock and vibratory loading and wear. The service life of synchronizer rings is therefore determined by their material properties and their precision of manufacture.
In this paper the series-production of truck synchronizer rings by powder forging is described. Material selection, fabrication steps, dimensional tolerances and mechanical properties are presented. A cost comparison with competing fabrication methods is given taking into account the necessary machining and heat treatment steps.
