Authors Abstract
Content
The paper describes the results of a study of the dynamic response of a 30 tonne truck equipped with two alternative engine-transmission systems, viz.
  1. a)
the stepless differential compound engine (DCE)
  2. b)
a highly turbocharged engine of the same rating with a 7 ratio stepped transmission.
The comparisons cover:
  1. a)
    0 - 80 krn/hr acceleration using a true dynamic and a quasi dynamic technique
  2. b)
a cross country 9 km route.
The DCE is shown to have superior acceleration characteristics but route behaviour of the two systems is similar.
