- The objective of NREL’s effort was to measure the thermal characteristics of JSR Micro’s lithium ion capacitor (LIC). The data will establish a basis for advanced thermal analysis and management for LIC packs for HEV applications. We used a one-of-a-kind large calorimeter along with advanced battery cyclers for the thermal characterization. In particular, we studied the electrical and thermal performance of the cell at 30 C. The electrical studies consisted of a modified hybrid pulse power characterization profile to determine the impedance of the cells as well as capacity cycling. The thermal characterization included (1) obtaining thermal images of cells under various power profiles, and (2) measuring heat generation from the LIC cells at 30 C. Of particular interest, the JSR Micro’s LIC cells were completely endothermic under charge rates up to 70C. The poster session will outline the heat generation and efficiency of the cells at 30 C and show how the LIC cell’s unique thermal characteristics can be used positively in an advanced vehicle thermal management system.
