Technology for Advanced Helicopters

Helicopters have been under active development for the last 50 years. The earlier years were characterized by configuration development and demonstration of capabilities, and the latter 25 years have been characterized more by pressing against the fundamental barriers of ideal performance, compressibility, and materials.

This paper reviews the trends that have preceded today's status and concludes that helicopter technology still has opportunity for significant growth ahead.
