ADS-33 is a generic specification that can provide guidance for helicopter handling qualities suitable for a range of helicopter classes. Since it is not necessary for a cargo helicopter to be as agile and maneuverable as a scout or attack helicopter, the specification has several topics that have to be tailored to a specific configuration procurement. This need for “tailoring” has been brought into focus by the effort to develop Joint Services Specification Guides (JSSG). This is a generic version of a total system specification, with emphasis on performance requirements and the ability to be tailored for a specific end item. To recognize the fundamental differences between fixed wing and rotary wing flying qualities, there is a separate section for each, and ADS-33 will form the basis for the rotary wing part. This paper outlines the topics in ADS-33 that have to be tailored, and summarizes the tailoring guidance.
