The advanced avionics systems of the future will utilize high speed parallel processors capable of billions of operations per second and possessing hundreds of megabytes of global memory. The ultimate usefulness of this processing capacity to provide a fighting capability at night, in adverse weather, and/or with single person crews is limited by the amount of data entered into it by the operator and/or by the data provided to it by analog sensors. This look at system sensory perception presents an overview based on system engineering experience at IBM Owego, NY which defines the considerations required to design an effective sensor suite for future rotary wing air vehicles.
