This paper describes an effective and efficient engineering approach that combines a requirements flowdown and traceability process with U.S. government customer involvement in all phases of the program. The result of this approach was a Functional Configuration Audit (FCA) that was completed on schedule, within budget, and required less than 2 hours to present to the customer and program management. The FCA was for the V-22 Integrated Avionics System (IAS), which consists of over 40 separate avionics computers integrated on a MIL-STD-1553B data bus.
