Switching Power Supply Design for Automotive Instrumentation

The use of large vacuum fluorescent displays in instrument cluster applications brings about the need for power supply inverters capable of providing an AG filament voltage in addition to the DC voltages required. In this paper, the design equations are developed for a switching power supply that meets these requirements. Equations for capacitor ESR requirements for the DC outputs are also developed, and a typical supply is designed.
