This paper outlines these roles through a discussion of the research, development, and demonstration programs and accomplishments of the various Departmental organizations, including: The Federal Highway Administration, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Federal Railroad Administration, the Urban Mass Transportation Administration, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the Office of the Secretary of Transportation.
