Styled wheels, once reserved for top range cars, are more widely used today. Future styled wheels will have to be even lighter due to anti-pollution legislation, which is becoming more and more severe.
Different types of styled steel wheels exist: Under-bead-seat, Full-face, Cladding, Mixed material, Hollow-body, Spoked etc.
In order to have style and lightness, new steel grades and new process can be used for such wheels. To obtain higher weight reduction, a non-uniform thickness reduction approach can be chosen. The weight of such wheels can be very low. New coatings will permit different finishes with new functions such as high scratch resistance, etc. As we shall see, steel has solutions enabling wheels to answer the needs of weight saving, style and cost reduction. Steels grades and their behavior will permit more freedom for stylists.
