During the last two decades methods for optimum design of structural and mechanical systems have been extensively studied. The methodology has matured to the point where it is beginning to be applied in the industrial environment. Utilization of this technology is at a stage where the finite element method of analysis was at about 15 years ago. Several large aerospace and automotive companies are extensively developing and using the methodology. The present talk is divided into four parts. Part (1) describes the overall design process and where the optimization fits in the system development. Part (2) describes the optimum design process. In Part (3), capabilities available in the area of structural and mechanical system design are described. Types of structural models and cost functions used, and constraints imposed are described. Two examples of optimization are described to illustrate the available capabilities. Finally, in Part (4) what needs to be done to get started in using the available optimal design methodology is described.
