Strategy for Incorporating DAFIF into a Modern Military Cockpit Interface

The Digital Aeronautical Flight Information File (DAFIF) is a database version of aeronautical information provided to the United States Department of Defense by the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency. This paper describes a practical strategy to incorporate DAFIF into a modern cockpit graphical user interface. This strategy is based on using Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Aeronautical Navigation Products as reference for presenting aeronautical information. The FAA products are then used in pilot task analysis. This provides a foundation for identifying concepts for incorporating DAFIF into a next generation cockpit interface in a manner that aids military pilots in these tasks. This paper provides four simple examples of implementing this strategy for a theoretical cockpit interface. Each example is based on a different type of FAA Aeronautical Navigation Product. This strategy identifies many various concepts that could be incorporated and helps prioritize them. Keeping a pilot-centered approach ensure the concepts continue to increase situational awareness and usability.
