- Road safety remains an overriding preoccupation of the French government. Accident fatalities decreased in 1983 and 1984. French road safety policy is largely devoted to measures aimed at influencing the behavior of road users and at encouraging local authority officials and opinion leaders to take action in support of road safety. To improve the protection of car occupants in head-on collisions, France and West Germany have proposed a joint program of realistic and accurate standards.
