- A STUDY of fuels for the cold starting of diesel engines has brought the authors to the following conclusions:
- 1.Normal petroleum hydrocarbon fuels will permit the starting of the best automotive engines at temperatures not below about 20 F without supplementary starting aids.
- 2.Materials blended into normal diesel fuels in optimum concentration to improve cetane number and cold starting may give a reduction in minimum starting temperatures of probably not over 20-25 deg.
- 3.Ethyl ether introduced into the air stream of diesel engines (not including crankcase scavenge) will allow starting down to at least -40 F without additional starting aids, but provided the crankcase lubricant and cranking facilities give sufficient cranking speed.
