- As part of the worldwide concern about air quality, there is a growing requirement for reduction of exhaust smoke from two-stroke gasoline engines. This requirement is most critical in those countries with large numbers of two-stroke street vehicles in major urban areas. This paper reviews the traditional lubricant approach for reducing visible exhaust smoke from two-stroke gasoline engines. It describes the development and use of two test methods for measuring exhaust smoke and their use in developing a low smoke lubricating oil for the Far Eastern market.
