Development of elastomeric bearing technology began early in the 1950's. At that time their application was limited to static load bearing applications. But, as helicopters grew in size and complexity over the past two decades and as they have found ever wider application, it has become obvious that the unique advantages offered by elastomeric bearings would be ideally suited to helicopter application. Since these bearings accommodate motion by simple flexing of their elastomer laminates, there are no rolling or sliding elements as in more conventional bearings. No lubrication or servicing of any kind is required. Seals, boots, or dust covers are not needed and there is no friction or wear. The result is a bearing system which provides extremely long life, and which requires no maintenance of any kind. In addition, a simple visual inspection of the bearing's surface at periodic intervals is sufficient to determine the bearing's condition. This feature provides the basis for the "on condition" replacement approach applied to the elastomeric rotor system. There is no scheduled overhaul interval. These bearings are simply replaced as required throughout the life of the helicopter.
