Authors Abstract
Content
The subject of shock in ships resulting from underwater explosion attack is surveyed briefly. Mention is also made of slamming of ships in heavy seas. Examples of damage are cited. The pressures generated by an underwater explosion and the motions they produce in an air-backed plate are described. A two-body system is used to bring out salient features of shock motions, interaction, equipment damage, and design criteria. Guidance on design techniques is also given.
The essential novelty lies in attempting a brief integrated exposition of shock in ships.
