WHEN the first paper on the end-quenched hardenability test bar was presented only seven years ago, there was considerable doubt and surprise expressed about the table included, which showed a large variation in hardenability of carburized 4615 steel.
Today, the reasons for most of this variation are understood and are taken as a matter of course. Measures must be taken in utilization of steel to compensate for this variable. As a result, the ability to obtain a uniform product is much greater than it was before the question was understood.
Discussed here by Mr. Boegehold are the principles of selecting steel on the basis of hardenability. The author further indicates some customary procedures as to hardness requirements in the as-hardened condition to ensure a desirable structure after tempering.
