Modern manufacturing processes have been streamlined over time to ensure build accuracy and minimize waste related to cost and schedule. For future aircraft development, rapid prototyping has afforded the ability to hone these processes further. The Joint Multi-Role Technology Demonstrator (JMR TD) Program is focused on building the next generation of rotorcraft, known as Future Vertical Lift (FVL), to replace the current military fleet. The Sikorsky-Boeing SB>1 DEFIANTâ„¢ Technology Demonstrator Team has created several innovative approaches for this purpose. Legacy methodologies from both companies were tailored for the rapid prototyping environment. Advancement in manufacturing technologies from research and development projects being executed by the JMR team, in partnership with the government and academia, has helped to provide additional insight on the best approach to FVL.
