Abstract
Content
In working with engineering information through computer technology, one of the key objectives is to connect the technical information with the end-user engineer in an effort to help improve productivity. One case where information has been directly linked to the user is at Cummins Engine Company, Inc. At Cummins the Society of Automotive Engineers' Global Mobility Database of technical papers has been set up in an in-house information retrieval system. The system provides company engineers and other personnel, using desk-top terminals, access to all published SAE research. This paper discusses how the system was developed and how it is used, including details on development experiences, relative costs, interface with computer systems, and feedback from the engineer users of the system.
