Mission success and survival in the intense Army 21 battlefield of the future will hinge upon the rotorcraft pilot's ability to effectively assess the overall situation and react appropriately, often within very limited time constraints. As a result, additional requirements are placed on the automation suite to assist the pilot in reducing cognitive workload demands caused by excessive data gathering and sorting, problem solving, and decision-making tasks (Fig. 1). Experience indicates that traditional hardware/software techniques are being exploited to the limits of their effectiveness to address these requirements. However, Artificial Intelligence (AI), specifically Expert Systems, is a technology area that offers great potential for improving mission effectiveness by providing the pilot with clearly defined recommendations for making mission-critical decisions.
