AS the result of a six years' study of photographs taken at 40,000 and 200,000 frames per sec, Mr. Miller has become convinced that knock is best explained by a combination of the detonation-wave and the autoignition theories.
In other words, he feels that knock is actually caused by a detonation wave that follows autoignition of the end gas.
As Mr. Miller shows in this paper, the results of many earlier research programs also favor the combined theory.
