Certain factors have limited the widespread implementation of health and usage monitoring systems (HUMS) and the realization of the technology’s benefits, including enhanced safety and reduced operational and support (O&S) costs. Existing barriers include relatively high entry and support costs for HUMS, the incompatibility of HUMS Ground Stations and support equipment among a diverse fleet of Aircraft/HUMS types, and a limited ability to upgrade existing systems with third party enhancements. The Rotorcraft Industries Technology Association (RITA), with the support of a number of industry participants, has developed a series of interface specifications for HUMS and HUMS data. These specifications are expected to result in the development of a “universal” HUMS ground station, the ability to interface with commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) support tools, and the ability to integrate third-party applications. Six RITA HUMS interface specifications are currently before the SAE for approval and ratification. The RITA HUMS Team composed of Bell, Boeing, and Sikorsky is currently planning a demonstration program for completion in 2003 and is soliciting participation from interested parties. These initiatives are expected to be of value to all civil and military operators in the international HUMS community.
