Risk Reduction Testing of Link 16 Prototype Software and Crew Interface for the Apache Block III Attack Helicopter

The Apache Integrated Product Team (IPT) is supporting implementation of Link 16 in a Joint Tactical Radio System-Situational Awareness (JTRS-SA) for the Apache Longbow Block III (AB3) Lot 4 production aircraft. During 2010, the USG and the Boeing Apache Analysis, Modeling, and Simulation (AMS) IPT are providing risk reduction testing of Link 16 prototype software and crew interface in the AB3 Engineering Development Simulator (EDS). A simulation experiment will be conducted in realistic operational scenarios representative of current USG operations. The AB3 Engineering Development Simulator (EDS), allows stakeholders to better understand and assess the Apache Link 16 initial design, support future Link 16 detailed design activities in follow on engineering efforts, and demonstrate the value of simulation in the design process. The contractor team will utilize the One Semi-Automated Forces (OneSAF) simulation with the EDS models to create a realistic mission and tactical environment to demonstrate J-Series message requirements between systems. The effort includes an integrated approach in outlining continuous operations analysis support throughout the design process. The objective of the activity is to develop a valid and affordable risk reduction test and evaluation process that provides effective integration and collaboration between stakeholders. This process bridges the gap between the user and materiel developer in working towards an effective design implementation in a realistic operational environment that would not otherwise be experienced until the AB3 Lot 4 aircraft were fielded. This paper will outline the risk reduction effort: methodology and approach, scenarios utilized, test operation, pilot feedback, data collection and engineering observation. It will explain how the process provides for design improvement, while providing insights for all stakeholders using Modeling and Simulation in an operational environment to prepare for detailed design by January 2011.
