High fidelity model of permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) is of great importance to the research on the control of PMSM, as well as the development and test of motor control software. This paper briefly summarizes the high fidelity modeling methods of PMSM and the related difficulties such as accurate iron loss modeling, elaborating the modeling method based on finite element analysis (FEA) data or experimental data with motor currents as state variables. In order to calculate the iron loss accurately in the motor plant model, a high fidelity modeling method is proposed, which can comprehensively considers electromagnetic saturation, cross-coupling, and accurate iron loss obtained from FEA or experiment. A PMSM is modeled in Simulink using the proposed method and validated by FEA results, which verifies the effectiveness of the proposed method. In order to improve the accuracy of iron loss estimation and reduce the storage space required by the estimation method in the motor controller, several iron loss estimation methods are analyzed, which concludes that the method based on Steinmetz formula has the highest accuracy and the required storage space is acceptable, and the accuracy of cubic polynomial fitting is the second, with a small storage space required.
