Remote Guardian System (RGS) Defensive Weapon System

The RGS™ was developed for the V-22 aircraft to provide a defensive capability against small-arms threats. The design of RGS evolved over several years during an internal BAE Systems development program in which user input was sought to evaluate the operational environment and unique constraints that would challenge the architects and designers of the system. The resulting solution was a defensive weapon system that provides 360 degrees of coverage through a remotely operated retractable weapon that compensates for platform motion. The system was designed to meet all operational requirements and the stringent safety requirements of remotely operating a weapon system. During development, it was realized through use of a modular, open-architecture design, the system could support a multitude of platforms including rotary- and fixed-wing aircraft, maritime, and ground.
