Content
Noise from road transport in the United Kingdom has been a subject of three separate initiatives originated or supported by central government. Progress achieved by means of 1) compensation, sound insulation and planning controls; 2) research and development of quiet heavy goods vehicles; 3) a quiet town experiment, is discussed. The overall cost and effect of the three parallel programmes is assessed along with indications for future policy.
