A series of measures are developed in Greece, in order to face and solve the complex problems of environmental pollution caused among other sources by motor vehicles. These measures are basically aiming at reducing air pollution in Athens Area where the basic source of a number of pollutants is traffic and where fleet has increased very rapidly in the past twenty years.
Setting environmental standards, application of vehicle inspection programs, development of public transport and infrastructure, new traffic management schemes and integrated urban planning are the main sectors of actions and planning which are expected to reduce pollution and prevent the deterioration of the human and material environment. Research on the interaction between transport and the environment is in progress.
