This study indicated the importance the U.S. Army Oil Analysis Program (AOAP) serves in predicting a failing mechanism, even with the high/fine filtration that is included with the Oil Debris Detection System (ODDS). The ODDS was predicted to replace the AOAP and prevent nuisance chip light landings for safety purposes. The Allied Signal T53-L-13B engine and transmission of the Bell Textron UH-1V helicopter population were the components studied, as both had the ODDS installed. Many of the ODDS equipped helicopters remained within the AOAP, and it is with this data that both components indicated to a p=0.05 level of significance that the ODDS alone is insufficient in predicting a failing mechanism.
