There is a growing need for batteries to power electronic systems within the aerospace industry. Interestingly, there is a significant overlap between drilling industry battery requirements and future commercial aircraft. Batteries in the drilling industry do everything from powering sensor systems with wireless communication to driving large motor-controlled valves. Whether the battery powered system is 30,000 ft underground or 30,000ft in the air, the system must work. This paper presents the practical requirements that aerospace battery engineers need to know in order to develop new high-temperature batteries for subterranean wells, both for the oil industry and for geothermal energy generation.
