Despite being used in vehicle crash systems since decades, the severity of a failing steering crash systems is not investigated in detail.
To accurately assess risks associated with a failing steering column crash system, a study was performed using three distinct failing mechanism. Those were compared to the baseline of a non-failing system. It could be shown that every one of these failures introduce an added injury probability to the driver.
