Authors Abstract
Content
Plastic fuel tanks have been utilized in mass manufactured vehicles since 1972. Parallel to this development, various test guidelines that require an exact description of the characteristics of plastic have been introduced. They are based on the assumption that no increased danger during vehicle operation, or during driving in traffic is possible, and that accidents will not be more serious.
Hence, the requirements are established for strength, deformation, durability and permeation, as well as for behaviour during exposure to fire. Thereby, the use of high molecular polyethylens in the blow moulding process has proved an exspecially suitable combination. Test practice experience with more than 600 different types, daily use, as well as accident and fire statistics show that the combination of desireable characteristics of materials, varied styling possibilities, modern manufacturing technology, and test requirements based on experience have produced very satisfactory results.
