ABSTRACT
This work reports on the design and piloted simulation evaluation of a feedback controller that utilizes measurements of the external load dynamic states to reduce load swinging, thereby increasing the precision with which an external load is handled. Results show a favorable impact on total mission-task-element time and load placement accuracy. Pilot ratings are favorable, but suggest that vehicle response types dominate the pilot's assessment of the task workload since the external load-stabilizing controller only provides load stabilization when the pilot controls are in detent.
