- A technology concept applicable to stoichiometric and lean burn engine operation-a metal hydride (MHx) module for the generation of H2 via reaction with gaseous H2O-was evaluated for the introduction of low levels of H2 (ca. 500 ppmv) into internal combustion engine exhaust for the enhancement of catalyst performance at low temperatures, such as during cold-start. Projected MHx module packaging volume, replacement frequency, and costs over the lifetime of a light duty vehicle are excessive, and considered prohibitive to technology viability.
