The P-F Interval: Key to the Transition from On-Condition to Condition Based Maintenance

The initiative on the part of Army Aviation to embrace "on-condition" maintenance had its genesis in the development of the Blackhawk program in the late 1960s. This change in the Aviation maintenance concept was a clear forerunner of today's efforts to achieve CBM. While the goal of "on-condition" was to optimize the usage of major components and reduce timed removals, the current paper will illustrate how this maintenance concept can be expanded to embrace fully the goals of CBM. If the necessary transformational steps that are required can be implemented across the logistics environment, the Army will realize the CBM promises of increased readiness at reduced cost and a lower maintenance burden on the soldier-maintainers.
