I suppose I should warn you that this is not a scholarly treatise on the merits of United States intellectual property law. The purpose of this article is to help you in your day-to-day work to understand the benefits of registering your intellectual property.
Much of the basic work involved with registering copyrights can be done by a literate person with typing skills. Trademark law is more complex, and a good attorney can be very useful in the registration process. Of course, there may be other points in your life where an attorney could be useful, ie., if your situation is complicated or litigation is involved, but if everyone follows the rules, these instances can be greatly reduced.
