A computer progra™ is presented which allows optimizing of spur gear pairs. The program iterates tooth-numbers for a given ratio, driving toward equality of tooth bending capacity and surface durability capacity. When equal criticality constrains tooth-number changes, the output is presented. Then the operator can change various input factors at will and rapidly observe the results. Thus a spur gear mesh can be defined with minimum weight and volume for a given duty. The program is written in Basic. It will work on any personal computer with a memory of 48 K or larger with minor modification. Some input and output constraints are discussed based on general aerospace power transmission practice and conventional aerospace manufacturing practice.
