To meet more stringent emission standards, catalytic converters have been moved closer to the engine where higher operating temperatures offer increased performance. For current platinum/rhodium three-way catalyst formulations, the increase in performance more than compensates for the increase in thermal deactivation. The largest advantage is seen for cold-transient FTP performance for HC and CO.
