Litton Guidance & Control Systems (G/CS) is the developer and supplier of Smart Multi-Function Display (SMFD) Systems for many military programs. The product described herein meets the unique requirements for the UH-60Q, the CH-XX and the SH-60R helicopters. An Open Systems Architecture (OSA) approach was taken in the design of the SMFD system. This approach allows the addition and deletion of the requisite functions for each application. OSA also provides the flexibility and extensibility required to adapt to changing mission roles and incorporating improvements in technology. This is proven by showing the easy adaptation of the current production UH-60Q display to meet the SH-60R and CH-XX requirements. The UH-60Q uses the display as an intelligent, graphics generating display supporting a FLIR. The CH-XX displays moving maps and text messages while the SH-60R displays unprocessed video information. The core components of the SMFD are the bezel, the Active Matrix Liquid Crystal Display (AMLCD), the backlights with their controller, the chassis, the Central Processing Unit, the Graphics Processor, the Video Processor, the backplane, and the power supply. These and other components are described. Together, or in subsets, they provide a versatile open architecture display system with high reliability and operability over a range of temperatures and altitudes.
